Robert George Barlen, AKA Bob Barlen


Bob Barlen is a writer and director who specializes in comedy and off-the-wall adventures. In 2007 he attended the Directors' Lab at the Canadian Film Centre, where he honed his writing and directing skills by making three short films. His previous short, PUSH AND TURN, was funded by a $25,000 grant awarded by the Canadian Film and Television Production Association, and premiered at Montreal's 25th annual Just For Laughs festival. Bob is currently writing NET PROFITS, a comedy television series, and THE PRIZE, a feature-lenth film. This summer he will direct THOMAS, a short film about a man obsessed with becoming the world's best pinball player.

Push and Turn has been invited to screen at the 25th Annual Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. You can read more about it here. Tickets go on sale and screening times will be announced on June 19.

I was just accepted into the Directors' Lab at the Canadian Film Centre! The program starts on July 16th, and I'm very excited about attending, and making some entertaining films while I'm there.

Push and Turn had its first public screening today at the NSI FilmExchange in Winnipeg. The audience laughed in the right places, which is always encouraging.

The official website for Push and Turn is up at www.pushandturn.com. Push and Turn is a short film I directed this summer, starring Craig Brown, Philip Williams, and Darren Frost. It is a ten minute comedy about a magic trick gone wrong.

My pitch for The Prize won at the Reel World Film Festival's Pitch Competition! It was selected by the judges as the best pitch of the event, which resulted in a $2,500 prize and a delicious trophy.

I was selected to pitch my feature-length script The Prize at the Reel World Film Festival as part of their new Pitch Competition. The Pitch will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22. How about you come see it? Yes, you! Well, I understand if you have other plans. No, really, that's OK.

Funding! Our budget was finally approved by the good folks at the CFTPA and we've now got some cash to start producing Push and Turn. We're hopefully going to be shooting by the end of May.

The Prize was pitched yesterday as part of Pitch THIS!, and it went very well. There was much confetti in the air at the Sutton Place Hotel. Thanks to the cast and crew for making it look fantastic!
